I recently attended an Andy Grammar concert. The lyrics to his songs deeply resonate with me. That evening, one particular song spoke to me.
“Little signs are everywhere
Catch the whispers in the air
Thank ’em for the gifts they bring…
I want more, more than the average
(Ooh) I want the magic.”
I see the magic all around me.
When I walk past a single feather in my path, I remember I have guardian angels watching over me. When I catch a glimpse of a brilliant sunrise or sunset before it disappears, I feel the magic of that fleeting moment.
My son recently experienced his own bit of magic when an unexpected check arrived in the mail right when he needed it most.
The magic knocked on my door with half of an apple pie. A former mayor turned elderly neighbor who likes to bake blessed me with an unexpected kindness.
I also feel it when my grandson’s face lights up and he squeals “Gigi” when he sees me. It washes over me in moments that feel a little sweeter or more special than the ordinary. Sometimes the magic looks simpler, like a quiet evening of relaxation around a summer fire.
Life can be hard. It brings circumstances we would have never chosen and challenges we never saw coming. Still, I choose to look for the moments of magic. They are often small but they surround us.
A hug offered at just the right moment. The beauty of a snowflake resting on my windshield. A brightly colored bird landing on my head in a foreign country. A kind soul offering help she didn’t have to give when I had a flat tire. Words written as a birthday wish that touches the deepest part of the heart.
The magic doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes we have to notice it.
Just like Andy sang, I want more.
For me, that means being open. It means having the eyes to see and the heart to feel because the magic is all around me.
And the choice is mine to notice it.
