People talk about the economy and the high prices of everything. My son who lives in Arizona and I compare gas prices. He often has it worse than I do. Housing costs continue to rise. And, my favorite burger and fries is closer to $10 than I would like.
Recently, I’ve been aware that there’s a cost to everything, but I am not referring to inflation or the cost of items in this economy. I’ve begun to realize that everything comes with a price, and I am given a choice as to which cost I will choose to pay.
It costs to work out and exercise. The cost is time, effort, soreness, pushing through the mental reservations, and more. To be fit and healthy requires a cost. It may be saying “no” to the sugary treat at work. Perhaps it’s the cost of healthier food choices. The cost could also be giving up sleep to exercise early or passing on time with friends to get the workout in. All of these are a calculated cost.
It also costs to not work out and eat healthy. The cost is pain, muscle determination, loss of vitality, minimal mobility, and compiling health concerns. To eat whatever I want and to be inactive requires a cost. It may be not feeling strong enough to care for grandchildren. Perhaps it’s the cost of added medical bills and medications. The cost could also be giving up travel and fun activities due to mobility concerns. While they may not happen immediately, all of these are calculated costs.
Today’s choices shape the life I will live in 10 years. I want to invest in healthy choices. Those include the food I feed my body, the strength I build, the exercise I provide my heart, and the sleep I protect. However, I can also invest in providing more time in my day, less stress in my busyness, deeper friendships that foster vulnerability, and a protection of my mental health. Investing in myself requires that I choose which cost I will pay.
As we navigate life’s choices, we wield the power to shape our future. With each mindful decision, we carve a path toward a future filled with vitality, strength, and purpose.Today, I choose to invest in myself. Let us embrace the power of choice, shaping a life rich in growth, resilience, and joy. Today, I choose me.
