Learning to See: A Journey of Compassion and Presence

“Above all I want to see differently.” This prayer has been my constant companion, but recently it has taken on a new meaning. My desire is to view the world through a lens of compassion. Instead of rushing through life focused on the next item on my to-do list, I want my eyes to be open to the needs of others and opportunities to serve.

Missing moments

This shift began after I watched a social media video. It featured a pregnant woman struggling with a heavy suitcase. As she approached the stairs, she stopped, holding her belly and pausing. The set up was simple–would anyone walking by on the busy street would stop to help? Men, women, young, and old hurried past unaware of her need. Finally, one woman offered assistance, lifting the suitcase with a smile. Her act of kindness was captured on camera, a moment of kindness in an otherwise indifferent world. As I watched, I couldn’t help but wonder: would I have been one of the many who hurried by unaware?

Learning from those who see

A loved one of mine exemplifies an incredible heart of compassion for people and animals. She moves through the world with an awareness that inspires me. Whether anticipating a child about to cross the street on a bike or ensuring a squirrel reaches safety, she notices what others often miss. She will jump up on the side of a semi-truck’s cab to offer directions or rescue an unattended child standing up in a shopping cart. Recently, she noticed a woman in a mobile shopping cart and thought to offer assistance with her groceries. Being around her has made me more aware of the needs I often do not see.

The truth is, I live a hurried life. My mind is swirling, juggling two or three thoughts at once, and this frantic pace keeps me from being fully present. This causes me to miss out on the small moments, the chance to see the needs of those around me. This awareness has brought me to my knees in the simplest prayer, “Above all I want to see differently.” Before I can act with compassion, I must have eyes to see. Only then can I become truly present and open to the opportunities to serve.
